PROTEST: End the US blockade of Cuba! [Sydney]

March 21 at 10:30 am to 12:00 pm

END THE US BLOCKADE OF CUBA

10:30am Saturday March 21, Sydney Town Hall

On the 29th January 2026, the US announced the blocking of all oil shipments to Cuba. Cuba has been a target of the US long before the sanctions first began in 1960, with Thomas Jefferson stating in 1805 that Cuba is “the most interesting addition which could ever be made to our system of States”. This proves that the origin of the US’s aggression towards Cuba is in their contradicting national projects: for the US, empire building; and Cuba, self-determination.

The scaffold for US aggression on Cuba is outlined in the 1960 Mallory Memorandum which calls for maximum aggressiveness for the manufacture of an opposition and internal subversion within Cuba. This aggressiveness has taken the form of economic sabotage, media sabotage, social sabotage, terrorism, bombs, violence, blood and death, manipulation of institutions, sanctions, and international pressure.

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 29, falsely labelling Cuba an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to the US. The order imposes economic penalties on any country that attempts to deliver oil to the island, which has already been under a US economic and commercial blockade for more than 60 years. Already the blockade of Cuba has manufactured a man-made humanitarian crisis, with rolling blackouts, shortages of medicines, and shortages of food.

The world has condemned the US blockade of Cuba at the United Nations for 33 consecutive years. This is because Cuba condemns US imperialist policies across the world, plays a significant role in international solidarity by sending medical staff overseas to train and assist personnel in countries of the Global South, and to share its successful literacy program with various countries, including Australia.

We demand:
– End the US blockade of Cuba.
– That the Australian Government condemn the ongoing US attacks on Cuba’s sovereignty and self-determination.
– The Australian Government, trade unions and other organisations send aid to Cuba in support of their electricity generation.
